Deputy Director, Strategic Finance 
 

Location

This is a London based role but please note the requirements for travel and level of flexibility we are able to offer prospective candidates.
 

Grade and Salary

  • This is a Senior Civil Service Pay Band 1 role.

  • External applicants can expect to achieve circa £70,000 - £85,000 per annum plus excellent benefits.

  • Standard pay rules apply for existing civil servants. 

 

Contract Type

This role is being offered on a permanent basis.
 

The Role

This exciting role offers the opportunity to lead the Strategic Finance and Planning, Finance Business Partnering and Risk Management portfolio within DIT. 

You will need to build strong and credible working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders. You will be responsible for providing strategic financial advice to senior leaders within DIT particularly on financial planning and fiscal events; project business cases; financial management and risk management and assurance. The Deputy Director, Strategic Finance is also responsible for leading on the future spending commitments of the department and financial risk. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead DIT’s financial approach to fiscal events working alongside strategy, policy and analyst colleagues to ensure high quality proposals that support department objectives are at the heart of Spending Review and Budget negotiations;

  • Develop a robust and deliverable Medium Term Financial Plan for the department in support of the Single Department Plan;

  • Coordinate the annual Business Planning process, ensuring resources are allocated to meet key priorities and drive agreed performance outcomes;

  • Lead and develop an expanding team of finance business partners providing insight to decision makers and supporting strong financial management by budget holders; 

  • Be the finance keyholder for business cases considered by the department’s Projects and Change Committee, driving a value for money culture across the organisation; 

  • Lead DIT’s approach to risk management, embedding this across the organisation and integrating it with financial and performance management;

  • Play a leading role in driving up capability within the DIT finance function and across the organisation;

  • Take a lead role in the ongoing development of the Government Finance Function.

You will be a strategic financial leader, with excellent influencing skills and judgment.

It is important that, through your CV and supporting statement, you give evidence and examples of proven experience of each of the selection criteria detailed.

Whilst we have no preconceptions as to what sectors or industries you will have worked in; the successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:

  • Accountancy qualifications with ICAEW, ACCA, CIPFA, CIMA or equivalent experience;

  • Strong understanding of government or wider public service budgeting and financial planning;

  • A track record of influencing major policy, project or commercial decisions;

  • Excellent personal impact and communication skills, with a successful record of building sustainable and productive relationships with a range of stakeholders both within the organisation and externally;

  • The ability to provide inspiring, strong and visible leadership to develop a talented, diverse and engaged workforce.

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of finance business partnering

  • Experience of risk management​
