Director of Finance
c. £65,000 per annum

Job purpose

To ensure that the charity has excellent financial management, accountability and support to all its stakeholders. To develop the knowledge, confidence and skills of stakeholders in relation to finance at all levels of the charity and to be a leader and role model to the charity through how you conduct yourself and your department.

Main duties of the role
  • To be responsible for, and provide through appropriate resourcing, the financial expertise, support and pragmatic guidance to the charity up to and including the board of trustees

 

  • To implement, through the finance team, a finance business partnering model to the wider charity, ensuring that the finance department provides advice that is technical, timely and supports the organisation’s strategic goals

 

  • As a member of the Executive and Director’s team, to be a visible leader in the charity, participating in the discussions and decisions regarding strategic changes beyond the finance department.

 

  • To support the Director of People and IT to ensure on-going development of the Corporate Resources Directorate as necessary

 

  • To proactively support and contribute to the development of new business enterprises within the charity

 

  • To provide expert and practical financial input to the finance board committee, the board and pension fund,

 

  • To design and implement an appropriate finance model for the organisation (including a full cost recovery framework)

 

  • With Learning and Development, develop a finance training package for the organisation to increase knowledge and confidence

 

  • With the CEO, be responsible for the management of risk and ensure the charity has an appropriate risk framework that is regularly reviewed

 

  • To ensure that all financial activities within the charity meet the requirements of all regulatory bodies and statutory requirements, including audit

 

  • To ensure that all quarterly and annual financial statutory and internal requirements are met, including VAT returns, annual accounts and budgeting

 

  • To provide financial input and sign off of all bids for new work, ensuring these are appropriately costed

 

  • To oversee the production of regular and accurate management information for management and the Trustees

 

  • With the Director of People and IT, ensure that the monthly payroll is accurate and appropriately authorised

 

  • To be the budget holder for the finance department.

 

  • To provide line management to the senior staff within the finance team in line with the charity’s expectations

 

  • To monitor and report on the progress of relevant departmental objectives and targets

 

  • To carry out any other duties commensurate with the grade.

Person specification

Key: Essential = E' Desirable = D; Application = A; Interview = I; Test = T

  • Experience of working in a senior Finance role and holding financial accountability

  • Hold a relevant professional qualification (eg ACCA, CIMA)

  • Knowledge of current financial best practice

  • Ability to produce charity accounts compliant with charity SORP and trading company accounts

  • Experience of leading year end processes and audit

  • Knowledge of VAT including partial exemption

  • Knowledge of payroll processes

  • Ability to analyse complex numerical and non-numerical data and reach evidence-based decisions

  • Experience of role modelling leadership behaviours including leading by example

  • Willingness to engage with, and contribute to, strategic decision making beyond a financial perspective

  • Experience of embedding financial processes into organisations with appropriate support and training for non-finance managers

  • Ability to plan and organise conflicting priorities

  • Experience of using a range of financial packages and database systems to generate meaningful information

  • Experience of managing a staff team

  • Experience of working in the voluntary sector

  • Knowledge, or an interest in, HIV and sexual health
