About the role

The National Cyber Crime Unit (NCCU) leads the UK’s fight against cybercrime and uses specialist capabilities and expertise to support law enforcement partners across the UK and coordinate the entire UK response to cybercrime. 

We are currently looking to recruit an Research and Development Officer to be based in London.

Our Research and Development team utilise technology to aid our investigations by exploiting new legislation to cause real world impact against cyber criminals. These roles are core to the delivery of NCCU and wider NCA operations. We provide access to the most up to date tooling and training opportunities.

Within this role you may be exposed to images of Child Sexual Exploitation: Those involved in child sexual abuse and exploitation target the most vulnerable and innocent members of our community. The NCA works tirelessly and diligently against these individuals and you may be expected to work directly or indirectly in tackling this threat. This may involve exposure to child sexual abuse images and material and you should consider and be aware of the sensitive nature of the work before deciding to apply.

 

To provide support all officers working on or assisting this type of operational activity will undergo a psychological assessment on taking up the role and at regular intervals once in post.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Provide tactical support to critical incidents and crimes in progress in a technical investigative and advisory function.

  • Develop specialised skill sets in order to become ‘Subject Matter Experts’ in cyber-related areas.

  • Support and create  bespoke technical solutions to NCA/NCCU operations and investigations, including real-time support in time-critical situations.

  • Work  with internal and external partners, across government and industry to build relationships, ensure best practice and explore new ways of working.

  • Look to continuously improve cyber investigation capabilities in order to keep pace with the new and developing threats.

  • Provide technical advice and guidance to other Law Enforcement partners.

Person Specification

To  be successful in this role you use your knowledge and expertise to deliver impact to criminals through online activity and technical solutions.

You will need to demonstrate the below behaviors:

You will also need to demonstrate the below technical and experience criteria:

  • Knowledge of programming languages (e.g. Python, Java or shell scripting) and networking

  • Creative and innovative problem-solving and research skills

  • Background in either digital forensics, penetration testing, reverse engineering or malware analysis

  • Knowledge of cyber crime and internet technologies

 

You will also have the below qualifications or experience:

 

Desirable:

  • HND or higher in a technical/scientific related discipline

Please note

  • The NCA is a 24/7 organization, and working patterns must support business requirements. You may be required to respond at short notice or outside of core hours.

  • Individuals will be required to undertake and pass a substance misuse test as part of pre-employment checks

  • The successful individual will need to have a valid SC Vetting clearance at the point of entrance or be willing to take and pass the Agency’s vetting clearance process at SC Level.   While in post, there might be a requirement for the candidate to be DV cleared

  • Aspects of this role might involve viewing  Child Sexual Exploitation material
