About the role

The National Cyber Crime Unit (NCCU) leads the UK’s fight against cybercrime and uses specialist capabilities and expertise to support law enforcement partners across the UK and coordinate the entire UK response to cybercrime. 

We are currently looking to recruit a Lead Data Scientist at either our London or Warrington office.

Our team of data scientists utilise technology to aid our investigations, exploiting modern machine learning techniques with the best data science tools to cause real world impact against cyber criminals. We provide access to the most up to date tooling and training opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deploy analytical capabilities in support of operations; manipulate data sets to solve strategic analytical challenges and provide support to intelligence-led enforcement activity against serious and organised crime.

  • Exploit information from a variety of sources to establish patterns of criminal behavior, discover emerging trends, develop intelligence leads and identify opportunities for an operational response.

  • Develop innovative solutions to data challenges through the effective use of software tools and the exploitation of data to extract maximum intelligence value.

  • Support and mentor members of staff, promote data science specialism across NCCU and wider NCA

  • Build relationships with colleagues within NCA and wider international law enforcement, to develop skills and cross-functional working to support Agency business.

  • Ensure the quality, secure handling and dissemination of information, maintaining confidentiality, sensitivity and duty of care in line with NCA policy

Person Specification

To be successful in this role you will lead a team of data scientists responsible for developing intelligence and evidential data collection opportunities using innovative techniques to combat existing and new threat areas of the Internet exploited by serious and organised crime. You will set and monitor the delivery of the team’s priority objectives, collaboratively work with other teams within NCCU and the wider NCA.

 

The successful candidate will be expected to keep up to date with data science techniques and adopt new techniques by applying such to NCCU operational problems

 

You will need to demonstrate the below behaviours:

You will  also need to demonstrate the below technical criteria:

  • Ability to problem-solve and determining appropriate tools and techniques

  • Ability to engage with stakeholders and champion the value of data science work

 

You will also need to demonstrate the below experience criteria:

 

  • Experience using and developing statistical,  behavioural or other analytical techniques.

  • Experience of data science tooling (e.g.  python, jupyter notebooks)

 

Desirable at entry:

  • A STEM related degree or equivalent experience would be an advantage but not essential.

Please note

  • The NCA is a 24/7 organization, and working patterns must support business requirements. You may be required to respond at short notice or outside of core hours.

  • Individuals will be required to undertake    and pass a substance misuse test as part of pre-employment checks

  • The successful individual will need to have a valid SC Vetting clearance at the point of entrance or be willing to take and

  • pass the Agency’s vetting clearance process at SC Level.   While in post, there might be a requirement for the candidate to be DV cleared
