About the role

The National Cyber Crime Unit (NCCU) leads the UK’s fight against cybercrime and uses specialist capabilities and expertise to support law enforcement partners across the UK and coordinate the entire UK response to cybercrime. 

We are currently looking to recruit a Research and Development Manager at our London and Birmingham office.

Our Research and Development team utilise technology to aid our investigations by exploiting new legislation to cause real world impact against cyber criminals. These roles are core to the delivery of NCCU and wider NCA operations. We provide access to the most up to date tooling and training opportunities.

Within this role you may be exposed to images of Child Sexual Exploitation: Those involved in child sexual abuse and exploitation target the most vulnerable and innocent members of our community. The NCA works tirelessly and diligently against these individuals and you may be expected to work directly or indirectly in tackling this threat. This may involve exposure to child sexual abuse images and material and you should consider and be aware of the sensitive nature of the work before deciding to apply.

 

To provide support all officers working on or assisting this type of operational activity will undergo a psychological assessment on taking up the role and at regular intervals once in post.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and deploy new techniques and tactics in support of operations. Lead on approaches to complex operational problems requiring technology to overcome.

  • Oversee the use and development of specialist capabilities, offering expertise to support law enforcement partners across the UK and internationally.

  • Provide tactical support to Operations investigating high end serious organised crime, support online operations.

  • Manage a team developing and deploying against technically complex threats. Develop operational plans.

  • Use knowledge  of cyber crime and  knowledge of UK legislation IPA and CPIA.

  • Deliver strategic and tactical digital solutions to operational challenges and emerging technological threats focused on serious and organized crime affecting UK 

  • The ideal candidate will have a sound Knowledge  of cyber crime and  knowledge of UK legislation IPA and CPIA.

Person Specification

To  be successful in this role you will lead a multidiscipline team responsible for researching, developing and implementing innovative tools, techniques and tactics for use in investigations into cyber-dependent and cyber-enabled crime.

You will need to demonstrate the below behaviours:

You will also need to demonstrate the below technical and experience criteria:

  • Experience of interpreting customer requirements/ threat landscape to develop technical solutions

  • Background in either digital forensics, penetration testing, reverse engineering or malware analysis

  • Experience leading a small team of technical staff in a time critical environment within a compliant fashion.

  • Experience of working with internal, external and commercial partners to steer development and investment

You will also have the below qualifications or experience:

Desirable:

  • HND or equivalent in a technical/scientific related discipline, or , equivalent relevant experience

  • Knowledge  of cyber crime and  knowledge of UK legislation IPA and CPIA.

Please note

  • The NCA is a 24/7 organization, and working patterns must support business requirements. You may be required to respond at short notice or outside of core hours.

  • Individuals will be required to undertake and pass a substance misuse test as part of pre-employment checks

  • The successful individual will need to have a valid SC Vetting clearance at the point of entrance or be willing to take and pass the Agency’s vetting clearance process at SC Level.   While in post, the successful candidate might be required to be DV vetted

  • Aspects of this role might involve viewing  Child Sexual Exploitation material
