About us

The Institute of Cancer Research, London, is one of the world’s most influential cancer research institutes. We are world leaders in identifying cancer genes, discovering cancer drugs and developing precision radiotherapy. Together with our hospital partner The Royal Marsden, we are rated in the top four centres for cancer research and treatment worldwide with a focus on taking research findings rapidly from the laboratory to the clinic, to improve outcomes for patients.

With a new and ambitious strategy, we are passionate about our mission to make the discoveries that defeat cancer.

As well as being a world-class research institute, the ICR is a higher education institution and a college of the University of London. The ICR is led by our Chief Executive and President, Professor Paul Workman – an expert in cancer drug discovery. In 2014, we were ranked top of the Research Excellence Framework (“the REF”), the definitive analysis of research excellence across all UK universities.

Our aims are to deliver excellent research for the benefit of patients, high quality training for the next generation of cancer researchers and clinicians, and a sustainable organisation.

The ICR has charitable status and relies on support from partner organisations, charities, donors and the general public.

We have more than 1000 staff and postgraduate students across three sites. Our laboratories are located on two sites - one in Chelsea, London and one in Sutton - and our head office is at 123 Old Brompton Road, London SW7 3RP.
