Welcome

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in becoming Director of Finance & Operations at Concern Worldwide (UK).

As the Head of International Support since 2012 and more recently the Interim Executive Director, I have had the privilege of seeing first-hand the exceptional work we do to transform the lives of the world’s poorest people. Together with our supporters, we are working for a world free from hunger and extreme poverty.  Concern is highly focused on working with the extreme poor in the most fragile and conflict-affected states.  This focus and our down to earth, practical approach are highly regarded in the development community and reflected through our membership of the Disasters Emergencies Committee (DEC) and strong relations with the Department for International Development (DFID).

Concern Worldwide, the global organisation, was founded in 1968 in response to the devastating famine in war torn Biafra. In 2004, the UK operation was formally established, bringing together offices in Belfast and Glasgow with a base in London. Concern Worldwide (UK) is an integral part of Concern Worldwide, playing a vital role in fundraising and advocacy, and connecting the organisation’s country programmes with humanitarian and development actors in the UK.

Concern Worldwide (UK) does not directly implement programmes overseas, but supports Concern Worldwide to do so. In recent years, we have leveraged our expertise in emergency response and strong supporter relations to influence UK governmental policy to tackle hunger and malnutrition. At the same time, we have significantly grown our funds from public and institutional donors to deliver programmes which alleviate hunger and extreme poverty.

This is a great moment to join us: over the next 18 months Concern Worldwide and Concern Worldwide (UK) will be developing our next five year strategy, building on this excellent work. So while the UK charity sector faces challenges, and the public fundraising environment is changing, we believe that with agility, creativity and the right approach we can maximise our resources and influence to help end extreme hunger and poverty.

If you want to use your talents and skills to help benefit the world’s poorest communities, we’d love to hear from you.

Bob Ruxton

Interim Executive Director
