Employment statement: equal opportunities

It’s not just words: we are an equal opportunities employer

In the London Borough of Waltham Forest, we take equality and inclusion seriously.

We are a proud family and carer friendly employer

In the London Borough of Waltham Forest, we take equality and inclusion seriously.  The council recognises the importance of work life balance and offers a range of policies to foster a diverse and supported workforce so that we can attract applicants from all parts of the community. With:

  • a variety of family- and carer-friendly policies (including various leave options) and

  • a forward-thinking approach to flexible working,

We encourage parents and carers to apply for jobs with us, and we also want them to stay, develop  and progress with us.

We were the first employer to offer parents of premature babies leave and additional pay and are proud to promote the Smallest things campaign

If you feel that an alternative working pattern would work better for you, please discuss this with the recruiting manager at the interview stage.

We’re a Disability Confident employer

We strive to recruit and retain disabled people and people with health conditions.

We periodically assess ourselves against the Disability Confident employer criteria and take all core actions to maintain this status.

We welcome applications from people with disabilities and have committed to guaranteeing to interviewing all applicants that meet the essential requirements for the job, if they sign up the scheme as part of their application.

Ethnicity pay gap strategy

We are committed to bridging our ethnicity pay gap through a series of actions ranging from supporting our employee-led Race Equality Network to various learning and development initiatives including unconscious bias, micro-aggression training and reverse mentoring scheme.

Gender diversity and intersex inclusion

We aspire to be a forward-thinking service provider and employer that embraces and protects diversity and equality of opportunity. We continually seek to learn from emerging good practice and thought, evolving inclusive language and terminology relating to gender identity and the intersex condition.

We take action to ensure that:

  • our approach places the individual in the centre;

  • that everyone is treated with dignity and respect as multi-faceted individuals;

  • if a trans person decides to transition, we will be ready as an employer to support them in any way that we can, in full consultation with them.

Our inclusion journey is a strategic priority

We direct considerable resources towards creating an environment where everyone feels welcome and where individual differences are shared and celebrated.

We are continually working to ensure that:

  • we identify areas for improvement;

  • our employees have effective support and representation networks;

  • we address our pay gaps;

  • we have a zero-tolerance approach to discrimination and we encourage anyone to report any incidents.
