Diversity & Inclusion at the SIA

Here at the SIA, our commitment to providing equal opportunities to all and creating a diverse and inclusive workforce is paramount in what we do.

We are a small but growing organisation. Overall, we have a workforce of around 400. In 2022/23, we increased our workforce significantly in our Inspections and Enforcement Directorate. Most of our workforce is concentrated in operational functions delivering services that protect the public (the Licensing and Service Delivery and Inspections and Enforcement Directorates). We also have support functions within the Chief Executive’s, Corporate Services and Transformation Directorates that enable us to operate effectively, efficiently and in compliance with the law. Our workforce is spread across the UK, with approaching half of our workforce now outside of London in the regions. The SIA is statistically representative of the UK population for ethnicity, with over 45% of the workforce identifying as being part of a minority ethnic group. This ratio reduces however at senior leadership levels. We are keen to encourage candidates from diverse backgrounds into senior leadership roles, including this one.

Here at the SIA, our commitment to providing equal opportunities to all and creating a diverse and inclusive workforce is paramount in what we do. This is demonstrated in our recruitment, training, promotion, internal and external opportunities, which are based on your abilities and potential.

Our officers are recruited on merit, through fair and open competition. We seek our strength through diversity and appoint suitably qualified individuals regardless of ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender, social backgrounds, age or disability.

During your time with us, we want you to develop to your fullest potential, and you will always be treated with dignity and respect.

We understand that feeling valued and respected for who you are enables you to give your best.

This is not just the right thing to do. It helps us build effective teams and helps us better understand the wide range of people involved in the security industry we regulate.

We have a variety of staff groups

Including:

  • The RACE network (Raising Awareness of Culture and Ethnicity) which has been established to represent all Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups at the SIA. The focus of this group is on inclusivity, and it is open to everyone regardless of colour or creed.

  • The Disability Forum which understands and reflects the interests of staff who live with or for those who have a caring responsibility for somebody with a disability or long-term condition. In joining Civil Service Disability Groups, we have a range of experience including but not limited to mental health issues, neurodiverse conditions, sensory impairments, long term health conditions and mobility impairment.

  • Gender Network is a platform to discuss gender in an open and safe environment. The network aims to: discuss and raise awareness on a broad range of gender issues; improve gender equality in the organisation; explore how we can educate and develop.

  • Pride Network are excited to bring a little bit of sparkle to the SIA and welcome anyone who wants to join us on this journey. All of us play a part in ensuring an accessible and inclusive workplace for all people regardless of their sexuality or gender identity.

  • Parents and Carers established to raise awareness of the needs of working parents and carers. The network is for staff who are parents (in any context) to children of any age and for those who are balancing work with caring responsibilities.

Whatever role you play within our organisation, our values should be evident through the job that you do and the way that you do it.
