Defence Nuclear Organisation

Our vision: Keeping safe and capable submarines at sea today and in the future – providing the UK’s strategic deterrent and supporting global security

The Defence Nuclear Organisation (Defence Nuclear or DNO for short) was established in 2016, as part of the recommendations set out in the 2015 Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR) to oversee all defence nuclear business, excluding operations.

Defence Nuclear is responsible for the delivery of all the UK’s submarines, from procuring them, through to disposing of them safely when they reach the end of their life, and for nuclear warheads, nuclear skills and related infrastructure, and day-to-day nuclear policy.

Delivering these programmes will cost tens of billions of pounds over the next few decades. Defence Nuclear consists of the people, equipment and infrastructure required to make that happen.

Since April 2018, DNO is also the sponsor for the new Submarine Delivery Agency, established to manage and account for the contracts previously held by Defence Equipment and Support.
