Choose to lead at Islington Council

I came to Islington four years ago as a newly qualified accountant from another Local Authority. Islington has always promoted internal candidates that want to step up so I've been lucky enough to have two promotions in my time here. As well as having excellent working terms and conditions such as generous leave entitlement and flexible working patterns, what has kept me working at Islington is the people I work with - from managers, to the people in my team, to the other stakeholders around the organisation, everyone is really friendly and supportive. It is a really exciting time to be working with such a diverse range of people in the everchanging landscape of local government.

I like working at Islington Council because of the support and investment into my skills and future career. Being on a graduate scheme has allowed me to study for a professional qualification and the opportunity to gain experience in a wide range of areas. Islington Council has supported my development through training and study days, as well as opportunities to work on interesting projects which allow me to gain the skills I need to have a career in public finance. The investment in people and clear path for progression assures me that there is an opportunity for rewarding career at Islington Council.

I have worked at the London Borough of Islington since 2013. I have always been well-supported to develop and grow at Islington through courses, coaching, mentoring and secondment opportunities. The staff are fantastic and the recent pandemic restrictions has only brought us closer as a workforce. My values relating to fairness, resilience and driving impact align strongly with Islington - one of the main reasons I have worked here for so many years.

I started working for Islington Council in 2017 in a very rewarding role. I was then promoted into the Senior Leadership Team, which has allowed me to excel further in my career. Islington is a great place to work and to build a career. It is a well-resourced borough and we are an innovative and forward thinking council. If you’re passionate about making a difference for our residents and working for a council who truly values you, you really couldn’t be in a better place!

Islington has offered me the chance to develop and be involved in an array of interesting and important projects. I can take pride in the services I work with such as Homelessness, Public Health, and Community Safety. From the start of my time with Islington I was encouraged to take opportunities, training, and entrusted with a wide variety of responsibilities. Islington funded all of my studies, provided me with time to attend college, and gave me opportunities to develop and take on responsibilities that furthered my learning. Now, as a fully qualified accountant, following a number of promotions, I can repay this support to others with their development as I am now responsible for all trainees. It has been a personal highlight to see other colleagues progressing through their studies and careers and I am grateful to Islington for that opportunity.
