Welcome

Thank you for your interest in the Director of Finance and Resources appointment at Anthony Nolan.

We exist to save the lives of everyone who needs a transplant: over a 40-year history, we’ve built a poignant and powerful story, in the UK and globally. The last ten years have seen us double the number of transplants and double our turnover: we’ve invested in new scientific technology, strengthened our offer to patients and raised our profile and income as well as delivering vital research, and invested in clinical trials which has changed the way blood cancer is treated.

So we’re an ambitious charity in our vision to save the lives of everyone who needs a transplant: we’re now looking for a Finance and Resources Director who shares our commitment to turn this into reality.

This is a particularly exciting time to join our unique and fascinating organisation. As we embark on our new three-year strategy, we need an exceptional senior finance professional who thrives as part of a team and who can provide clear direction, rigour and challenge. You will support myself, colleagues and the Board as we take key decisions about our future and will work right across our organisation to ensure the Finance and Resources Team delivers high-performing, responsive and cost-effective services.

This is a pivotal appointment in our charity and the role requires an appropriate accountancy qualification as well as an outstanding track record as a senior leader. Skills in organisational development and programme management would be valuable, and you will demonstrate both analytical capability and business acumen. Crucially, you will be an innovative forward thinker who has real empathy with our mission and work.

As a key member of our Strategic Leadership Team, you’ll help us achieve our strategy and can be sure that the role you play has a direct bearing on the lives we save. We want to offer the right person an exceptional professional challenge: if you, too, can see our full potential, and if you have the skills, experience and qualities we are looking for, we’d love to hear from you.

About

About Anthony Nolan

Anthony Nolan is a pioneering charity that saves the lives of people with blood cancer. Every day, the register is used to match remarkable individuals willing to donate their bone marrow or blood stem cells to people who desperately need lifesaving transplants.

Anthony Nolan was born in 1971 with a rare blood disorder and the only cure was a bone marrow transplant. None of Anthony’s family was a match and there was no system to find an unrelated donor. In 1974 Anthony’s mother set up the world’s first bone marrow register to match donors with people who need a transplant. Since then, as the UK’s blood cancer charity and bone marrow register we’ve enabled more than 13,000 transplants to take place.

Shirley Nolan’s vision was that every person in need of a transplant would be able to find a successful match and have a good quality of life after their transplant. Every year we’re getting closer to achieving that vision. In the last 12 months, through innovative and pioneering work – and the passion and dedication of our staff, supporters and volunteers – we have made great strides in achieving the aims we set out three years ago.

We recruited 70,000 new potential donors in the last year, reaching the milestone of 675,000 donors on our register. We are a UK charity with international reach, Anthony Nolan works with hospitals and donor registries around the world to find matching donors for patients, wherever they are.

Almost 1,800 people in the UK – 37,000 worldwide – are waiting for that vital match. Over the past 12 months, we have worked hard to change that statistic and we’re making matches right around the world: we have helped facilitate 1,300 lifesaving transplants.  As well as running the register, we also provide patient services, awareness and research. In 2008 we set up a state-of-the-art Cell Therapy Centre for banking umbilical cord blood and conducting ground breaking research.

Through an income of £52M, 100,000 supporters and over 300 staff, we aim to provide the right people, environment and funding to maximise our impact, save lives and to achieve the best outcomes for our patients.
