Director of Finance and Resources

£70,000 per annum

Responsibilities

Leadership, Strategy and Planning
  • Work closely and collegiately as a member of the Executive Team, playing a key role in setting the strategic direction for the charity, and planning and budgeting

  • Leadership of the charity’s finance, human resources, IT and facilities, ensuring that these are fit for purpose and reflect developments within the wider sector

  • Work with the ELT to develop and manage a performance framework to deliver the organisational strategy

  • Carry out excellent modelling and analysis to support the development and implementation of the strategy and plans

Finance
  • Lead all aspects of being a high quality finance partner including management accounts, cash flow, budgeting and reforecasting, reporting and related matters

  • Lead the audit process and prepare the annual report and statutory accounts

  • Ensure a cost-conscious and value-for-money organisational culture

  • With the Director of Grants and Impact, undertake financial due diligence on grant applicants

  • Lead on risk management, compliance and incident reporting across the organisation

  • Maintain appropriate financial and contractual policies and processes

  • Lead financial negotiations with our suppliers particularly ref facilities and premises

  • Access specialist knowledge and advice from e.g. banks, lawyers, tax advisors

  • Lead on treasury management: bank accounts, investments etc.

  • Liaise with the Treasurer and support the Finance, Audit and Risk (FAR) Board sub-committeeEnsure Trustees have the financial information and support they need, operate as Company Secretary and attend Board meetings.

HR
  • Lead on ensuring a positive working environment and culture, including the annual appraisal process

  • Manage a small team, motivating and supporting them to give of their best.

  • Oversee recruitment and induction and ensure management of day-to-day HR tasks and employee relations matters

  • Work with our external HR consultant and pro bono employment lawyers as needed

  • Oversee the annual policy review schedule and ensure policies are updated

IT
  • Develop and regularly review an IT strategy for the organisation

  • Manage the relationship with our external IT support company

  • Ensure that our IT function is adequately resourced and efficiently managed

  • Lead on effective storing and sharing of information within the organisation, ensuring compliance with GDPR/Data Protection Acts etc

  • Ensure cyber security, through regular testing.

Facilities, office and organisational management
  • Lead on key areas relating to the COVID-19 context, including home working and safe office working, keeping abreast of government support schemes and other changes in a moving and uncertain environment

  • Ensure that facilities are appropriately managed by the Finance and Resources Team and ensure resources and equipment meet the needs of the team

  • Be responsible for the annual review and renewal of our insurance cover.

  • Other duties commensurate with the responsibilities of the role, as may be reasonably required.

Knowledge and skills

Leadership experience

  • Experience operating as part of a senior leadership team and of working with Boards

  • Experience of leading teams, ideally in an outcomes-focused organisation.

  • Experience of recruiting, developing, mentoring and managing staff.

  • Experience of line managing finance functions, including through change.

  • Demonstrable motivation and negotiation skills, able to build personal credibility and successful relationships at all levels.

Functional experience

  • Significant post qualification experience in finance, IT, HR and operations in a charity (experience with Xero would be helpful)

  • Experience of producing and managing budgets with diverse income and expenditure.

  • Experience of developing and managing finance systems and of implementing financial policies, processes and controls.

  • Ability to lead on long-term financial planning and cost analysis that proactively contributes to the strategic direction of an organisation.

  • Experience of business partnering, and reporting at Board level

  • Able to lead and manage on best practice in finances, people, IT and other relevant areas

  • Experience of risk management and compliance

  • Experience of managing and developing IT in a small organisation.

  • Experience of project management and working with multiple stakeholders.

  • Up to date knowledge and experience of data protection.

 

Qualifications

  • Degree-level education or equivalent.

  • Professional accountancy qualification.
