Director of Finance
£90,000 per annum
Job summary
Creating a resilient and sustainable organisation is fundamental to our long term strategy and the Director of Finance is a pivotal role helping to provide strategic leadership and responsibility for ensuring the continued financial sustainability of the Museum.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, this is a key senior appointment that will bring strategic and commercial leadership, delivering sustainable financial outcomes bringing our NHM vision, values and outcomes to life.
​
We are looking for commercial acumen, combined with problem solving issues and emotional intelligence that will embrace innovation and inclusion at all levels. A first-class communicator, the Director of Finance will win the trust and confidence of a broad range of stakeholders and funders. Thoughtful and reflective, you will adopt the highest standards of rigour in the evaluation of risk and assurance, place our audience at the heart of our decisions and include culture, diversity and inclusion as well as commercial outcomes.  You will translate ideas into action through the delivery of customer-focused solutions, embedding rigour, innovation and value for money through your practices.

More broadly– leading a team of ~22 talented colleagues – you will provide credible leadership to the organisation in ensuring that we deliver our ambitious plans and inspire future generations through our work.
We are looking for someone with the ability to think strategically and with excellent creative problem-solving skills as well as strong attention to detail and an ability to win the trust and confidence of stakeholders.

The successful individual will be responsible for delivery of the following key priorities:

Setting the tone for financial leadership for the organisation by living the organisation values and immersing in the organisation.

Engaging and developing meaningful relationships with senior officials from HM Government, Trustees, the Executive Team, the National Audit Office, counterparts in the Sector and with Members of our Board, for the wider benefit of the Group.

Helping to drive the agenda and lead the products and outcomes for the NHM’s Audit and Risk Committee.

As an active member of the Executive Team and the Board, making meaningful contributions in sustainable plans to help improve the organisation.

Developing a medium-term financial plan, underpinned by a detailed financial model, to set the Group on a sustainable footing for the current and next Spending Review.

Leading, managing and developing the Finance team to ensure the delivery of a professional and proactive business partnering finance service that is valued by colleagues and fully supports the strategic and operational priorities of the museum.

Leading the production of NHM statutory accounts and engage a wide range of stakeholders in developing and delivering a clean set of Accounts.

Leading all financial analysis, planning, reporting and budgeting for robust and rigorous financial plans, putting in place a flexible financial model to respond to the needs of the organisation.

Ensuring a robust system of internal control is maintained, including the management of risk. Provide assurance on this through the management of an effective internal audit service.

Oversight of NHM finances and investment portfolio – approximate income of £85m pa

Leading, developing and overseeing the Finance team, enabling them to add strategic value to the business, and to wider organisational projects and plans.

Supporting major capital projects, applying strong strategic financial management and stewardship.

Person specification
Essential:
-
A qualified accountant with experience of assurance and risk oversight and a proven track record of successful financial leadership and governance.
-
Proven understanding and experience of strategic and financial planning within a complex organisation, and sound commercial experience and judgement.
-
Strong leadership skills – you will have extensive experience of developing a team to deliver an effective finance function. You will also have a proven track record for developing diverse and inclusive teams with a good coaching and mentoring skills set.

Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey, exchange and present information in a clear and concise manner.
-
Evidence of driving change, and delivering business value in an innovative environment.

Desirable:
-
Experience of working in the public sector or with public finance.
-
Experience of developing and/or delivering an internal, effective business partnering function.
-
Previous experience of capital projects.
