Director of Strategic Financial Management
Role Purpose…
To lead the creation and development of a strategic finance business partnering team to enable Macmillan to deliver its financial and commercial organisational goals in the most effective way.

The team will be responsible for improved and more relevant financial management reporting to all key stakeholders, planning and budgeting, quarterly forecasting, financial decision-making support, the identification of material financial risks (and mitigation actions) and financial opportunities (with key dependencies).

Establish and develop an experienced team of strategic finance business partners closely aligned to the organisation structure to improve and align support with each directorate.

Co-ordinate the timely development of financial budgets and plans with the finance business partners and the Strategy and Planning directorate.

Monitor actual performance against budget, quarterly forecast and prior year. Prepare incisive analysis of financial results and propose remedial actions where necessary to ensure that Macmillan achieves its financial targets.

Produce accurate quarterly financial forecasts highlighting potential risks and opportunities, and support the formulation and implementation of mitigation plans where necessary.

Ensure that financial management reports meet the requirements of senior stakeholders, provide a clear picture of where actions need to be taken to ensure that financial plans are delivered by each accountable budget holder or SRO.

Develop a strong and consistent business partnering culture within the division so that the team focusses on value-add activity, acting as a trusted advisor to each directorate, demonstrating the ability to constructively challenge ideas and plans with data led insights.

Promote a culture which empowers budget holders and supports the delivery of value for money services, including reporting on benchmark information and key income and cost drivers where appropriate.

Provide financial scrutiny of new expenditure or income generation proposals against established criteria that includes: value for money, affordability and its contribution to the organisation’s strategy.

Lead the functioning of the Procurement and Investment Board for all strategic sourcing and investment opportunities.

Explain complex financial issues to non-finance managers, developing their understanding of financial information to improve overall effectiveness and empowering them to take full responsibility for the financial management of their budgets.

Act as the Senior Responsible Officer (SRO) for appropriate and relevant projects and programmes.

Work collaboratively with the Director of Accounting and Financial Operations on matters relating to accounting, tax, treasury and financial control.

Design and implement process improvements that lead to improved reporting capabilities that meet business needs and reflect industry best practice.

Exemplify inspirational leadership, building a committed, empowered and successful team through effective selection, development and performance management throughout the employee lifecycle. This will also include role modelling the Macmillan behaviours and owning people management challenges with the support of Human Resources.

As part of the senior leadership team, shape and contribute to the strategic direction of the directorate and engage people in the division to understand the strategy and their responsibility to co-own and deliver the strategy.

Develop close working relationships internally and externally to enable a culture of collaboration, and, in doing so, ensure that the division works in a similar fashion towards an inclusive culture and learning environment.

Lead the development of a clear and integrated annual plan and budget for the division that clarifies priorities; aligns resources; and establishes processes for regular review and decision making.

Continually build the capacity and capability within your division to achieve Macmillan’s aims and objectives through embedding effective coaching, talent and succession planning approaches.

Deputise for the Executive Director (CFO) where appropriate.

Be familiar with and always adhere to relevant Macmillan policies and procedures.

Any other duties as reasonably required in line with skills, knowledge, and experience to contribute to Macmillan’s wider success.
To do this role, you will have…

Industry recognised qualifications appropriate for this role (i.e. ACA, ACCA, CIMA or CIPFA)

Experience of operating as a Finance Director in a standalone organisation or Divisional Finance Director in a larger organisation than Macmillan.

Ability to analyse and make recommendations to the Executive team and Trustees and have the capacity to drive through key business changes.

Strong leadership experience, gained through senior manager/director roles in complex organisations in a relevant field with proven ability to lead, motivate, inspire and develop a function to deliver high performance.

Proven ability to succeed and collaborate in a complex matrix environment.

Successful track record of driving sustainable organisational change, whilst maintaining performance and morale.

Strong experience of managing significant budgets within a tightly constrained financial environment.
