Director of Accounting and Financial Operations
Role Purpose…
To lead the provision of all accounting (financial and management accounting), tax,
treasury and financial operations within Macmillan. Develop and implement a strategy to
ensure the division runs efficiently, effectively and can demonstrate the highest financial
control standards to support the organisation to deliver its strategic goals and operational
KPIs.
In this role, your accountabilities and responsibilities are…

Provide leadership and oversee the division’s transactional functions to ensure than income is collected, and invoices are paid effectively and efficiently.

Lead teams to deliver transaction processing, fixed asset management, treasury and cash management, VAT and tax management, statutory reporting and audit, management accounting and the development of financial policies.

Continuously look for and implement ways to improve efficiency and effectiveness through process improvements and automation (e.g. AI and Blockchain).

Oversee the annual audit, production of the Annual Report and statutory accounts.

Ensure that Macmillan’s tax affairs are managed within HMRC guidelines.

Maintain the highest financial control standards; ensuring these reflect best practice, that policies and procedures are documented, all team members are regularly trained, and compliance is monitored and reported.

Act as the Senior Responsible Officer (SRO) for appropriate and relevant projects and programmes in the division.

Work collaboratively with the Director of Strategic Financial Management on matters relating to planning, budgeting and financial decision support.

Design and implement reporting process improvements that meet business needs and reflect industry best practice.

Exemplify inspirational leadership, building a committed, empowered and successful team through effective selection, development and performance management throughout the employee lifecycle. This will also include role modelling the Macmillan behaviours and owning people management challenges with the support of Human Resources.

As part of the senior leadership team, shape and contribute the strategic direction of the directorate and engage people in the division to understand the strategy and their co-ownership and delivery responsibilities.

Develop close working relationships internally and externally to enable a culture of collaboration, and, in doing so, ensure that the division works in a similar fashion towards an inclusive culture and learning environment

Lead the development of a clear and integrated annual plan and budget for the division
that outlines priorities, aligns resources and establishes processes for regular review and decision making -
Continually build the capacity and capability within your division to achieve Macmillan’s
aims and objectives through embedding effective coaching, talent and succession planning approaches. -
Deputise for the Executive Director (CFO) where appropriate.

Be familiar with and always adhere to relevant Macmillan policies and procedures.

Any other duties as reasonably required in line with skills, knowledge and experience to contribute to Macmillan’s wider success.
To do this role, you will have…

Industry recognised qualifications appropriate for this role (i.e. ACA, ACCA, CIMA or CIPFA).

Experience of operating as a Finance Director in a standalone organisation or a Divisional Finance Director in a larger organisation than Macmillan.

Ability to analyse and make recommendations to the Executive team and Trustees and have the capacity to drive through key business changes.

Strong leadership experience, gained through senior manager/director roles in complex
organisations in a relevant field with proven ability to lead, motivate, inspire and develop a function to deliver high performance. -
Proven ability to succeed and collaborate in a complex matrix environment.

Successful track record of driving sustainable organisational change, whilst maintaining performance and morale.

Strong experience of managing significant budgets within a tightly constrained financial environment.
