Main Tasks and Responsibilities

​

1. Strategic financial advice

​

  • Provide strategic financial advice on all areas relating to commercial projects within the Trust to stakeholders. Supporting the delivery of Trust objectives within available resources. Ensure Directors, clinicians and managers are fully briefed on strategic financial issues

​

  • Provide strategic advice on the development of business cases working closely with the Decision Support Team. Evaluate Business cases and provide advice on the viability of proposals.

 

2. Financial Reporting and Analysis

 

  • Undertake a comprehensive analytical review of the monthly historical and forecast results to ensure the veracity of information and highlight key risks and issues.

​

  • Provide Divisional reporting pack for the divisional board and other committees. Ensure that key financial issues are clearly and professional presented to meet the divisional and audience needs.

​

  • Embed the reporting of private patients income and expenditure in the trust by ensuring that clinical divisions share in the benefit of private work

​

  • Work closely with clinical areas on the presentation and analysis of the historical and forecast results for private activity ensuring agreement between clinical areas and Imperial Private Healthcare

 

3. ​Commercial Analysis

 

  • Support the Commercial Director and Commercial Finance Director in maximising income for the Trust. Ensure that there are appropriate systems in place to ensure all income due to the Trust is captured, promptly billed and subject to terms in the interest of the Trust.

​

  • Lead on the preparation of commercial business cases, working with clinical and operational colleagues to ensure appropriate decision making

​

  • Working with Imperial Private Healthcare and clinical areas to identify areas of private activity growth and developing realistic operational plans to deliver this growth

​

  • Working closely with the decision support team, lead on the development of business cases ensuring the financial and strategic case is clearly articulated and subject to financial due diligence review before presenting for approval to the decision support panel.

​

  • Ensure all cases have an objective method of measuring benefits and lead a systematic approach to reporting and supporting the delivery of expected benefits.

 

4. Business planning and performance

 

  • Lead the develop of annual and long term financial plans for the Commercial Director incorporating income, expenditure, workforce, relevant activity drivers, and agreeing all assumptions with relevant budget holders and directors.

​

  • Ensure that financial plans are developed in line with Trust agreed financial parameters, approach and timetable, and are owned and signed off by the Commercial Director and relevant clinical and corporate areas.

​

  • Maintain detailed bridging statements reconciling year on year performance, identifying recurrent and non-recurrent variances. Maintain analysis of “normalising adjustments” to ensure underlying trend analysis and year on year comparisons can be clearly reported.

​

  • Ensure that key financial risks to delivery of the financial forecasts, and mitigations / opportunities are identified and agreed with the division.

 

5. Staff management and development

 

  • Maintain the highest professional standards and ensure all staff maintain their Continuing Professional Development requirements on behalf of the Chief Financial Officer;

​

  • Manage and support direct reports to deliver business objectives and reach their full potential;

​

  • Conduct annual appraisals with all direct reports and ensure that all staff within the areas you manage receive annual appraisals;

​

  • Ensure that upon appointment a rigorous induction process is undertaken which assesses the new employee and ensures that they are not allowed to operate without supervision until they have achieved the required level of competence.

 

6. Expert advice and training

 

  • Provide expert advice to the Division on any change in local or external policy, legislative changes or opportunities and risks that may impact on financial performance.

  • Research and network effectively to develop knowledge and awareness of the impact of local and external policy changes and opportunities

​

  • Provide a comprehensive training programme across all areas of financial and businesses activities tailored to meet the division’s needs.

​

  • Actively contribute to the Trust/s financial management training programme for non- financial staff including the design of training material and facilitation and delivery of training events. Workforce Planning and Reporting

​

  • Work closely with the Human Resources Business Partner to ensure that establishments and organisational structures are aligned with financial budgets. Support the division with the development of its workforce strategy.

 

7. Other Duties

 

  • Provide cover for senior colleagues as appropriate.

​

  • Assist in producing ad hoc reports and in project work.

​

  • Undertake any other duties requested as appropriate to the banding.

  • The postholder must have a recognised CCAB or equivalent qualification, and have significant experience in senior roles within finance and be fully committed to Continuous Professional Development.

  • Lead the monthly financial reporting and forecasting process for the Commercial Directorate to produce the monthly reports showing financial performance, ensuring appropriate accounting applied and that the analysis of income, activity, expenditure, CIP performance enable all budget holders to understand their position. Ensure all risks and opportunities are flagged.
  • Lead the financial management process and budgetary control process for the Commercial Directorate and ensure there is appropriate financial governance, including financial controls, reports and systems in place
  • Support the Associate Director: Business Partnering with the development of financial reporting ensure transparency of income and expenditure, and to incentivise the right behaviours.
  • Provide leadership and line management to a team of 2 staff. Manage activities in other teams where they are undertaking activities relevant to the Commercial Director.
