Welcome

Moved by the plight of the injured Royal Navy sailors from a recent naval battle, in 1694 William III and Mary II signed a royal charter establishing a Crown charity for the benefit of naval seamen and their families. Things have changed a lot since then, but Greenwich Hospital remains a vital provider of funds in supporting naval sea men and women in the UK. And with that deep heritage, and an eye to the future, we are excited to launch this recruitment process for a new Finance Director.

Greenwich Hospital is no longer a hospital, nor is it based in Greenwich. But it is still a Crown Charity, and an organisation with an extensive asset portfolio that it manages to generate funds to provide necessary charitable support to a range of worthwhile causes in the navy sector. We do hold property investments in Greenwich town centre, including the lively Greenwich Market, as well as agricultural and residential holdings in Suffolk and Northumberland, and a significant financial investment fund.

Our charitable work extends to a variety of activities, including provision of bursaries to naval families at the Royal Hospital School, grants to our extensive naval charity network, and benevolent funds to naval veterans across the UK.  We are often the final call for support when other organisations have not been able to help, and we are proud to be able to achieve this through our strong financial base, which means that we do not need to undertake direct fundraising, but can leave that to other worthy organisations.

With an asset base of around £350m, Greenwich Hospital’s financial future is secure. But that does not mean that we’re not looking for ways to grow and develop. We are in the process now of developing our new post-Covid investment strategy, as well as reviewing our operational plans to achieve it. The Finance function has been overhauled in the last year, and the new Director will benefit from that work and be able to take it further. Despite our long legacy, we are not afraid to utilise technology, and have been bringing in a range of new systems to help drive forward efficiencies, and strengthen our governance.

Whoever comes in to join us will have a terrific opportunity to create something great, and produce their own legacy to be proud of.  We are looking for colleagues excited by the chance to grow, and want to provide a space for development.

Greenwich Hospital has a small head office team, but big ambitions. We look forward to hearing from you.

Andrew Turner

Interim Director
