We are seeking an exceptional Director of Finance and Operations to take a strategic role at an exciting time of change and opportunity for the museum. The successful candidate will play a critical role in the leadership team; to deliver a sound operation, ensure we maximise commercial income, shaping and delivering the strategic plan. They will be responsible for providing strategic leadership for the following areas; Finance, HR, IT, Legal, Risk Management, Governance and Facilities Management.

Founded by Sir Terence Conran in 1989 and described as the “World’s coolest design museum” by The Telegraph, the museum has welcomed over 6 million visitors, staged more than 100 exhibitions and grown its global reach, working with 96 venues in over 25 countries. On the 24th November 2016, we opened the doors to our new home, refurbishing a Grade II* listed building to international acclaim. The move tripled the museum space, created world class exhibition galleries, library, event spaces, auditorium and learning spaces.

Since reopening, we have welcomed 1.6 million visitors and were awarded the European Museum of the Year Award 2018. This year the museum has put on its most successful exhibition to date, Kubrick: The Exhibition, breaking all previous admissions records. As the world’s leading design museum, it makes the impact of design visible and is the only place in the UK where the design industry, education and the public can come together to change the way people think about themselves and the future.

As a registered charity, we generate more than 98% of our operating budget from admissions, retail, charitable donations and sponsorship. Having set a spectacular stage for the future of the museum, we are now building a long term sustainable operating model, one which has entrepreneurship and forward thinking at its heart.
