Department Information

Within the Trust the Essentia Technology Group is responsible for the delivery of information systems and services to the whole organisation and community services to support clinical and business integration. It leads in the development of IT strategy and directing all delivery programmes and services. Essentia Technology provides a range of critical IT services many of which are running 24 - 7. It is also responsible  for ensuring that IT Governance is executed effectively in order that the Trust complies with its information obligations.

 

The Trust operates from about 50 campus based buildings & 10 satellite sites and over the coming years, the Trust will extend its’ reach further into the community and more widely into the Academic Community.

Job Summary

The purpose of the Enterprise Architect is to proactively and holistically lead enterprise responses to present and future business need by identifying and analysing business strategy and requirements under the direction of a Chief Enterprise Architect.

The Enterprise Architect will present business and IT leaders with recommendations for projects to achieve target business outcomes that capitalise on relevant business strategies and requirements. The Enterprise Architect will steer policy and decision making toward the evolution of an agreed future state architecture.

Key Relationships

The post holder will work with all stakeholder groups across the various IT, business units both internally and externally to the Trust at all levels of seniority. The post holder will also be expected to maintain relationships with appropriate external suppliers of IT and related services, systems and staff at all levels in other healthcare and related organisations.

​

The post holder will work directly to the Chief Enterprise Architect and maintain close, day to day working relationships with the immediate enterprise architecture team, the leads of other IT architectural domains, Business Relationship Managers and other core functions across IT.

A high level view of post holder’s relationships can be summarised as follows:

Duties and Responsibilities

The post holder is required, in partnership with the Chief Enterprise Architect and Business Engagement Manager, to:

Strategy

  • Responsible in partnership with the Business Relationship Managers for the definition, design, creation and communion of effective IT Services across the Trust and compatibility with a number of different organisations and  environments. To take complete Design Authority over this area of development.

  • Responsible for the definition, design and architectural assurance of the delivery of software services for the Trust, in relation to Kings Health Partners, Clinical Advisory Groups, the wider NHS, local authorities and future Trust requirements.

  • The post holder will work collaboratively with members of the IT Department and consult with external health care partner organisations to build a view of wider strategic initiatives. They will be aware of developments within the commercial health care sectors both within and outside the UK.

  • The post holder will have responsibility for ensuring that IT Service Portfolio is kept in alignment with the stated architectural landscape.

  • Be responsible for the effectiveness and integrity of delivered IT Services in alignment with established strategy/objectives.

  • Develop a clear, adoptable, effective delivery framework for the establishment of new services.

 

Business Architecture

  • Cultivate relationships with the assigned business stakeholders in partnership with the nominated Business Relationship Manager.

  • Maintain a knowledge of strategic business plans.

  • Assist in developing and be responsible for maintaining a current and future state business architecture.

Information System & Technology Architecture

  • Design and cost end-to-end integrated systems.

  • Design architectural initiatives that improve efficiency and increase quality and safety in line with business strategy.

  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of the organisation's technologies and architectures.

  • Assist in the development and be responsible for the maintenance of current and future state architectural blueprints.

  • Communicate architectural decisions, plans, goals and strategies.

  • Develop architectural metrics and reports for the Chief Enterprise Architect.

 

Data Architecture

  • Design and implement enterprise data and metadata structures.

  • Create a plan to integrate business systems and workflows in support of business strategy.

  • Develop and enforce standards and principles for data management and integration.

 

Architectural Programmes & Initiatives

  • Initiate and assure the delivery of architectural programmes that align IT with business strategy and Architecture and Design Business Plan.

  • Oversee and deliver the requisite schedules, requirements, specifications and design documents for initiated architectural programmes.

 

Research & Development

  • Initiate, research and deliver technology evaluations and recommendations.

 

Architecture Consultancy

  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of IT industry best practices, standards, technologies, architectures and emerging technologies in order provide architectural consultancy.

  • Provide architectural consulting to programmes, projects and initiatives.

  • Support business and IT strategic planning.

  • Support product development teams.

  • Act as a focal point for enterprise architecture and IT standards.

 

Architectural Governance

  • Assist in the development of and communicate and deploy Enterprise Architecture Governance processes and policy.

  • Communicate and apply enterprise technology standards and principles.

  • Review new and existing programme and project architecture for compliance with IT standards, policies and architectural plans.

  • Document exceptions to architectural standards.

  • Ensure that project documentation captures significant architectural decisions.

  • Ensure that architectural governance is a fair, consistent and transparent process.

  • Identify architectural risks and propose alternatives and solutions.

 

Management Responsibilities

  • Act for the Chief Enterprise Architect when required.

  • Manage team members as assigned per project or programme.

  • All elements of Enterprise Architecture for assigned directory including Strategy, Management, Policy, Control, Governance, Assurance, Planning and Migration.

  • Risk management for Enterprise Architectural Components.

  • Ensure compliance with HR policy for Development Review, Development Planning, Sickness and Absence.

 

Architecture Processes & Tools

  • Assist in the development of and communicate and deploy Enterprise Architecture processes.

  • Assist in deploying and maintain the Enterprise Architecture repository and tool set.

  • Perform annual architectural maturity assessments.

  • Produce regular architecture status reports.

 

Design

  • Responsible for ensuring that assigned architectural blueprints in the following areas remains fit for purpose and meet the strategic needs of the Trust over  future years:

    • Workflow Management

    • Registration / Access / Identity Management

    • Records Management

    • Equipment supply and tracking.

    • Specialist systems.

    • Data integration and synthesis.

    • Business intelligence and management information services.

    • Research and analytics capabilities.

  • Assist in the development and maintenance of an effective IT architecture and design capability to include;

    • People; Work with staff to deliver agreed outputs.

    • Processes; Build and operate effective processes to allow the definition and design of new IT service components.

    • Tools; use the assigned and approved tools and models provide effective management and use of architectural deliverables and artefacts.

    • Information; Use appropriate information resources to manage the design lifecycle for the IT service catalogue.

  • Manage a portfolio of design solutions through their full lifecycle. Be responsible for the design, commissioning, assurance of delivery and transition and evaluation, of assigned deliverable IT services.

  • Assist with the development of and maintain a Trust-wide IT service offering which is compatible with KHP, community service integration and other major Trust initiatives.

  • Contribute to and maintain an effective roadmap for transition of existing applications and associated infrastructure and systems into an effective, planned, controlled IT service catalogue.

  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of a roadmap from the period of completion of the base lined IT service strategy in alignment with the evolving business strategy lifecycle.

 

Architectural Programmes & Initiatives

  • Initiate and deliver enterprise architectural programmes that align IT with business strategy and Architecture and Design Business Plan.

  • Create enterprise architectural programmes and initiatives that deliver competitive advantage and innovation opportunities whilst continually improving the Trusts estate.

  • Assure (as required) requisite enterprise architectural programme documentation including programme budgets, charters, schedules, requirements documents, specifications, design documents and testing strategies.

 

Research & Development

  • Initiate and deliver enterprise architectural evaluations and recommendations.

  • Monitor the market trends providing updates and recommendations for new enterprise architectural implementation.

 

Architecture Consultancy

  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of enterprise architecture industry best practices, technologies, architectures and emerging technologies.

  • Provide architectural consulting and assurance to programmes, projects, initiatives and other organisations as required.

  • Support business and IT strategic planning.

  • Act as the focal point for enterprise architecture and IT standards.

 

Architectural Governance

  • Communicate and deploy Enterprise Architecture Governance processes.

  • Forge, shape, influence and sustain trusted and effective relationships with senior/main decision makers.

  • Promote the established architecture to customers and key stakeholders and be an authoritative point of contact for advice and guidance in this regard.

  • Build and maintain effective partnerships with members of the KHP and other external healthcare and local authority organisations that are associated with the creation and delivery of IT services.

  • Communicate (both verbal and written), with all levels of the multidisciplinary hospital team, external partners and with patients through focus groups in a diplomatic and tactful manner.

  • Encourage an innovations culture. Keep abreast of new solutions, systems, products and approaches to ensure that appropriate designs are created and deployed.

Financial 

  • Produce well-formed, costed designs and estimates.

  • Ensure all time is assigned to appropriate cost centres.

  • Manage and develop capital programmes in the region of £20m.

  • Assure capital budgets of up to £20m and ensure that enterprise architectures are delivered against original business cases initiatives.

 

Commercial 

  • Management and assurance of commercial proposals for the Trust that involve Enterprise Architecture. Ensure that commercial services are viable, fit for purpose and profitable.

  • Be responsible for the provision of commercial architectural services, the governance of the services and assurance that services are fit for purpose.

  • Provide consultancy services on behalf of Essentia Technology and Essentia Trading as required.

 

Policy and Quality

  • Contribute to the establishment, development and maintenance of standards and principles relating to the architecture, design and service lifecycle of IT systems.

  • Review all requirements and designs for compliance to Trust, regulatory and associated principles and standards.

  • Oversee and monitor the quality of deliverables into the IT service catalogue.

  • Influence policy at a Trust level with regards the development and implementation of new enterprise IT services.

Education / Qualifications

Essential [A/I] 

  • Educated to Master degree level in an IT, science or engineering discipline or equivalent qualification, or with relevant experience, training and knowledge

  • Certification or substantial demonstrable working knowledge of an appropriate enterprise architecture methodology or framework such as TOGAF, Zachman or Agile.

  • Certification or demonstrable working knowledge of associated frameworks or methodologies (e.g. ITIL, PRINCE2, MSP, UML etc.)          

Previous Experience    

Essential [A/I] 

  • Experience as an enterprise architect or other senior other architectural discipline.

  • Experience of implementing projects in an OGC governed environment (PRINCE2, MSP).

  • Substantial architectural solutions design experience within an organisation that uses a structured design methodology.

  • Architectural dependencies (data, integration, process).

  • Proven ability to initiate creative design solutions that solve business issues.

  • Exposure to: Microsoft enterprise tools (e.g. SharePoint Dynamics, BizTalk, SQL Server, .NET etc.) and Messaging Services HL7, XML.

  • Full IT service lifecycle exposure (ITIL).

  • Effective engagement with senior stakeholder groups.

  • Experience of managing a variety of large, complex projects - scheduling and planning skills important

Additional Information

Essential

  • There may be a requirement for some occasional weekend working, out of hours and on call work.

  • When working on multi-organisational projects there is a potential for travel to and work from partner sites
