PURPOSE OF JOB

The Financial Accountant is responsible for supporting the Head of Financial Control in keeping good accounting records and maintenance of the General Ledger systems and processes. In addition, the role supports Comic Relief’s finance team in decision making for compliance with HMRC and statutory reporting.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain the accounting system and associated reporting package, maintaining the chart of accounts and liaising with software suppliers to lead updates and upgrades.

  • Prepare and file the VAT return in line with making tax digital ensuring accounting records are up to date and accurate.

  • Understand corporation tax computation returns and deal with standard enquiries from HMRC facilitating any inspections.

  • Play a key role in financial control and month end procedures.

  • Lead in preparation of the annual report and accounts for Charity Projects (aka Comic Relief) and subsidiary entities.

  • Support the finance team in annual external audit exercise.

  • Help prepare reports for relevant committee meetings.

  • Review accounts to ensure trading company transactions have been appropriately recorded and intercompany accounts balance.

  • Play key role in providing training to finance, and non-finance staff as required.

  • Support Finance Change projects and actively seek to improve day to day system effectiveness.

  • Undertake such other reasonable duties as the line manager may require from time to time

  • Keep abreast of financial developments across the charity sector

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

Essential:

  • Qualified Accountant.

  • Experience of using finance systems.

  • Sound knowledge of Charity SORP, IFRS.

  • Experience of year end statutory accounts

  • Expert book-keeping knowledge

  • Knowledge of VAT relevant to Charities.

  • Experience of dealing with external and internal auditors.

  • Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues

  • Line management experience

  • Effective communication

  • Able to balance competing priorities and manage workload appropriately 

  • Good IT skills in Microsoft Office particularly Excel

  • Systematic and accurate in work

  • Professional approach

  • Robust knowledge of financial controls

  • Organised and able to work to deadlines

  • Commitment to the policies and values of Comic Relief

  • Dynamic professional with a positive, solution orientated and fun approach.

Desirable:

  • More than 1 year post qualified experience

  • Experience of using Great Plains of Microsoft dynamics.

  • Knowledge of gift aid and corporation tax structures.

  • Knowledge of PAYE, NI and Pensions.
