Introduction Letter

There’s never been a more important period for Local Government and It’s such an exciting time to join Camden right now. We are a hugely ambitious organisation, with a flair for creativity and innovation and always putting residents at the heart of what we do.

Our Leader often talks about Camden’s proud and rebellious spirit, a spirit that brings together communities to bring about real social change, ensuring that no one gets left behind. Despite the challenges that the COVID pandemic has brought, the council is committed to building back better, particularly with the launch of Camden’s Renewal Commission that brings together residents, local businesses, leading economists and  social activists to create tangible ways to make our residents’ lives better. Importantly this will be led by our residents’ experiences of life in Camden, so we understand the challenges people are facing, and how we can build a better, fairer borough.

The Finance team will play a vital role in supporting the delivery of Camden 2025, our vision for the future of Camden. We couple our innovative, bold approach with excellent advice and sound financial management whilst placing huge emphasis on our business partnering approach, working in tandem with services to become trusted advisors for all elements of policy and service decisions. It’s that way of working that enables us to add the most value, as well as maximising our ability to ensure strong financial management. Camden has been able to manage the impact of the pandemic so far and I’m confident that this approach will enable us to continue to provide great outcomes for our residents, while ensuring that the Council has the financial discipline and rigour to implement lasting change.

Many exciting challenges lie ahead. We complete our current medium-term financial strategy (MTFS) this financial year and will work through a new programme for the next financial year. Unlike many traditional budget setting processes, Camden’s approach focused on the delivery of outcomes, investment in early intervention and achieving better value for money. Although our approach has been different, because of this we have proposed a budget that will deliver better outcomes for our residents.

We are also making good headway on delivery of the councils Community Investment Programme (CIP), which is our 15-year plan to invest capital funding in schools, homes and community facilities.

Camden is a fantastic place to work! I have an excellent, highly skilled, and effective team, all of whom are committed to delivering their best for the residents of Camden. We are constantly striving for continuous improvement and we encourage a culture of fairness and opportunity for anyone who is keen to progress.

We offer many employee benefits here at Camden including a competitive salary, interest free season ticket/travel card loan scheme and an excellent pension scheme. We reward people for their performance and contribution to Camden through our annual variable payment scheme and furthermore, we value output over hours, so we offer good flexible working arrangements. Many members of the Finance team work flexibly, with all different working patterns supported. We do not expect to fully return to the office as before and our future approaches will have flexibility at its heart – allowing our people to work where they want, wherever possible.

Camden 2025

We have worked with our communities to create a new vision for Camden in 2025.

Together we want to make Camden a better borough – a place where everyone has a chance to succeed, where nobody gets left behind, and where everybody has a voice.

As a response to Camden 2025, the council also has a new plan called Our Camden Plan. This sets out how we as an organisation will play our part over the next four years to achieve the Camden 2025 ambitions.
