Letter from Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust Finance Director

Thank you for your interest in these senior finance posts at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust.

I am looking to recruit two high calibre individuals to join the senior finance team at an exciting time as we seek to become an outstanding organisation for our local population, our staff and most importantly for the thousands of patients we treat.

Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust (BSUH) is an acute teaching hospital working across two main sites: the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton and the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath.  The Brighton campus includes the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital and the Sussex Eye Hospital and is also the Major Trauma Centre for the region.  The Trust has expenditure of over £600m per annum, provides services to over a million people and employs over 8,000 staff.  Further, the Royal Sussex County Hospital is currently undergoing a £485 million programme (3Ts) to replace all the buildings on the front of the main hospital site. The work is happening over three stages and will take nine years to complete. The new facilities will meet the highest clinical standards and offer patients a modern, spacious care environment.

Over the last three years, we have faced considerable challenges with our quality, operational and financial performance but we are now looking to the future with renewed confidence.   On 1st April 2017, BSUH and Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (WSHT) entered into a three year arrangement when the WSHT leadership team was appointed to lead the Trust.  The agreement identified a number of key priorities which included delivering the improvements necessary to enable BSUH to exit Financial Special Measures and effective oversight of the 3Ts Programme.  This is why I am looking for candidates for these pivotal roles who are astute, confident, motivated and resilient; and who have the energy and commitment to support the delivery of our ambitious agenda.

I would love to hear from you if, like us, you are committed to the values and principles of working in the NHS and you recognise what is required to succeed in these roles.  You will need to be able to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment where you will be working with talented teams who show and expect commitment to improvement.  In return, you will have a chance to be part of something significant and develop unique skills for your future career.

I hope you will consider these roles to be fantastic opportunities. Please read all the information provided, talk to our recruitment advisors and come to see the hospital for yourself.   I look forward to meeting you and welcoming you to the Trust.

Kind regards

Clare Stafford

Finance Director
