Welcome Letter

Dear Candidate,

Welcome to the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and thank you for your interest in joining the Government Finance Profession (GFP).

BEIS sits at the heart of the Government's strategy for a prosperous and secure United Kingdom, ensuring a bright future for everyone. As a newly created department with responsibilities for business, industrial strategy, science, innovation, energy, and climate change, we have ambitious plans that will be delivered by the department and its 46 agencies and public bodies.   We have a strong sense of public purpose and our bold objectives include delivering an ambitious Industrial Strategy; maximising investment opportunities and bolstering UK interests; promoting competitive markets and responsible business practices and ensuring the UK has a reliable, low cost and clean energy system.  Like all government departments we need to ensure that taxpayers' money is invested wisely and provides them with an enduring return, you will play a crucial role in this.

The Government Finance function comprises around 10,000 people across departments, agencies, and Arms' Length bodies (ALBs). Together we are responsible for over £750 billion expenditure a year, managing over £1,450 billion of assets and £3,500 billion of liabilities. From strategic business partners to technical accountants, all members of the finance community are instrumental in helping maximise value for government spending. You will be joining a strong and thriving profession that has made great progress in recent years establishing a unified operating model across government.  As a member of the GFP, you will have access to the Government Finance Academy with a range of learning and development opportunities to build your career.  We will also make sure that your talent is maximised, both through the work of the GFP People Committee and within BEIS.

Within BEIS, whether working as a forward facing finance business partner, enabling the work of policy and delivery directors in the department, or working in central finance, providing management information to the Executive Board and transparency for taxpayers, you will be part of collaborative teams working with great colleagues that give you a real sense of 'belonging'.  We are focused on making sure that finance is at the heart of decision making and together we will be Protecting Value through robust stewardship of, and accounting for, public money; Adding Value through insightful analysis that is respected by decision makers; Improving Value through professional advice that increases the economy, efficiency and effectiveness of the department’s programme of work and Valuing our people through the development of their skills, capability and careers.

Good luck with your application and I am very much looking forward to welcoming you to the team.

Regards

Tom Taylor

Director Finance & Portfolio
